Deputies Respond to Winnwood Skate Incident

Clay County Deputies responded to Winnwood Skate Center, 4426 NE Winn Rd., Kansas City, MO, shortly be 10 pm on New Year’s Eve to a report of shots fired. Deputies were initially told of the incident while on a traffic stop with a woman who was on her way to pick up her child at the skate center.

While en route to the skate center the shots fired call was reported. When deputies arrived, they encountered a large disturbance involving youth spilling out of the Skate Center into the adjacent Target parking lot. Kansas City Police officers began arriving to assist with crowd control. Deputies were unable to locate anyone who was hurt.

Deputies saw teens engaged in a fight in the Target parking lot. They saw one teen reach for his waistband during the fight and Tased him. They took that teen, a 14-year-old, into custody and recovered a loaded handgun from his waistband.

They later learned he was accused of using the weapon to rob another teen of his shoes earlier in the evening. After EMS evaluated the suspect, Clay County Juvenile authorities declined to take the 14-year-old into custody, and he was released to a parent.

No one was hurt in this incident. The area was cleared with the assistance of KCPD and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
